River Tourism and Water Sports Scope

The Ganges has nurtured great cities on its banks. It feeds hundreds of big towns and cities on both sides of its 2525 km long flow from Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal. It has the power of absolution. A bath in the Ganges absolves man of his worldly sins. The cities like Haridwar, Varanasi, Allahabad, Patliputra, Kanauj, Kolkata and Gangasagar are just a few names of the legendary cities on the banks of the Ganges. Kanpur also stands in the list.

The first important town by the Ganges in UP is Kanpur. Known as the Manchester of the East, the city of Kanpur is a famous industrial town of UP. It is said to be the birthplace of Lord Rama’s sons Luv and Kush. It also has a historical association with the British period. The Peshwa Baji Rao II was banished by the British here. A boat ride will be pleasant to visit various famous Ghats of the Ganges around Kanpur. It is not very common today because of the heavily polluted portion of the river near Kanpur but the area around Bithoor is still good for a boat ride in the evening.

Adventure and sports have tremendous potential towards promotion of tourism. They cater to the craving of humans for recreation, enjoyment-and adventure. A sport or adventure activity may attract: tourists with high level of attainment as professionals, people who have been practicing it as a regular hobby, people who are novice and would like to try their hand if they get a chance, and . The spectators (as tourists) who would like to see a competition or a performance.

Almost all the adventure activity which is water based is white water oriented. White water basically means fast flowing. Water which due to some obstructions in its path is turbulent at those places which gives it a white appearance due to the surf produced. Adventure sports which are practiced on flat water are mainly sea based, though very large lakes can also be used for the purpose. These include- water rafting, Water skiing, Wind surfing.
