About Kanpur

Located on the banks of holy River Ganga, Kanpur is the biggest city of Uttar Pradesh. Kanpur is a city of many wonders, and is inherently Indian in all regards. Kanpur brings out the flavour of India, making it one of the most interesting places to visit in the country.

Kanpur grew significantly because of its industrialization and central location. It is the second most populous city in Uttar Pradesh, after Lucknow, and its urban agglomeration is among the largest in India. It is an important road and rail hub and has an airport for domestic flights. The city is a major commercial and industrial centre and is especially renowned for its leather industry, which includes some of the world’s largest tanneries. The central part of the city lies northwest of India’s largest cantonment. The surrounding region is a fertile stretch of alluvial plain between the Ganges and Yamuna rivers. It is watered by tributaries of the two rivers and by the Lower Ganges Canal.

The city is known for its leather, textiles and engineering products. It is a historically important city right from the time of the mythological past of the Hindus. Kanpur is also the seat of the IIT, the premier technology institute of India. When at Kanpur, it will be a good idea to visit Brahmavart, also called Bithoor, and situated just 23 kms from the city.
