Kanpur grew significantly because of its industrialization and central location. The central part of the city lies northwest of India’s largest cantonment. The surrounding region is a fertile stretch of alluvial plain between the Ganges and Yamuna rivers. It is watered by tributaries of the two rivers and by the Lower Ganges Canal.
The city is known for its leather, textiles and engineering products. It is a historically important city right from the time of the mythological past of the Hindus. Kanpur is also the seat of the IIT, the premier technology institute of India. When at Kanpur, it will be a good idea to visit Brahmavart, also called Bithoor, and situated just 23 kms from the city.
